SMOKE ON THE WIND
ONCE UPON A LIFETIME
They say we Indians lived at a place where they now live. I don’t remember. I asked about love, respect, honor, harmony and balance. They answered and said, “We don’t remember.” I told them about talking to the animals, and of thanking them for their many gifts. I told them also about the rivers, how cool and refreshing they were to us, how we would drink from them. Also I told them how we thanked The Creator who made them. They answered and said, “We don’t remember.”
Amused, I continued and said, “Share with us the stories that your elders told you, and the lessons you learned from them. They began by saying, “We were taught to work hard so we could buy the things we want – fancy cars and VCR’s. Things like that – you know.”
I answered and said, “I don’t remember.”
Then I continued and asked, “Tell me of the people that come to your village. The songs that they sing and the gifts they bring. The dances you share and the feast that you prepare.”
They answered and said, “Man, what are you talking about?”
I said, “Yes! Yes, my brothers! I’m talking about Man! Do you remember?”
