AT THE MOVIES WITH HALEY ZIMMERMAN

Bringing a little life back to the old Disney classics, Enchanted is a wonderful blend of the original cartoons with a modern, life-action spin.

The plot consists of the stereotypical fairytale with a few twists. Beginning in animation with Giselle, the movie’s damsel in distress, falling in love with the hunk of a prince Edward about two seconds after they meet. When Edward’s wicked stepmother, Queen Narissa, finds out that the two are planning to marry, she banishes Giselle from their fairytale land and sends the young woman to the very real, very 3-D Manhattan. In this un-enchanting life-action world, Giselle faces the difficulties of life in New York with the help of a very attractive single father, played by Patrick Dempsey.

Giselle doesn’t exactly make the best first impression, randomly bursting out into song and getting the dirty rats and cockroaches to help with housekeeping tasks, but her good nature and kindness charms Dempsey’s character, Robert, and his daughter. Meanwhile, Prince Edward is still in fairytale world and upon realizing that his beloved lady is missing, decides that he will stop at nothing to get her back. Clueless and utterly self-absorbed, the prince ventures into the jungles of New York.

While the script isn’t the greatest piece of genius ever written, the actors do a great job delivering corny lines and fulfilling the cartoon-ish nature that the story is meant to carry out. The acting is typically well done, with Amy Adams doing a very believable job as Giselle, who is just as bubbly and darling as a fairytale princess should be. The evil stepmother was awfully miscast, as Susan Sarandon’s annoyingly whiny voice just does not fit that character. James Marsden, however did a wonderful job at playing the most narcissistic, moronic, yet charming Prince Edward.

The cinematography is no big feat in this movie, with the animations your typical modern cartoon and the computer graphics in the live-action sequences not being anything too impressive, but the movie doesn’t really need those things. Catching your attention with its simple charm, Enchanted shows that a movie can be captivating and entertaining to all ages without the use of constant special effects.

Very humorous from beginning to end, this movie doesn’t take itself too seriously. Never hesitating to make fun of the classic cheesiness that we all know and love about those dear old Disney flicks, Enchanted will truly enchant from beginning to end.
