AT THE MOVIES WITH KASEY BUTCHER

This November, a little bundle of joy will be delivered to the Butcher household—a new baby brother or SISTER. I was excited when I found out, but also a little apprehensive. I mean this is a baby. I haven’t lived with one of those in a long time. My very slight apprehension grew into fear for my life after going to see Daddy Day Care starring Eddie Murphy (Showtime).

Daddy Day Care is the story of two hard working fathers, Charlie and Phil (Murphy, Jeff Garlin, Full Frontal), who get laid off after their division of a major advertising agency gets cut. Bills are starting to pile up and money is starting to whither away. It is then that Charlie gets the inspiration to start a day care out of his house- Daddy Day Care. Business starts out slow, as many mothers are doubtful that two men can really take care of their children. After opening week, however, word gets around about the fun the kids are having and more and more children are placed in the Daddies’ care. Well, what used to be the only credible day care in town, the Chapman Academy (a.k.a Princeton for pre-schoolers) is starting to feel the heat and its anything but maternal owner, Miss Herridan (Anjelica Huston, Blood Work), is willing to do anything to put Daddy Day Care out of business. Lucky for Charlie and Phil, this is a family comedy, so everything turns out perfectly.

Although it did make me a little scared at first, in the end, Daddy Day Care made me realize how much fun it’s going to be having a little squirt around. Seriously, Charlie’s son, Ben (Khamani Griffin) was so sweet. All the kids were, well eventually.

Overall, Daddy Day Care is a really cute, funny movie. It redeems Eddie Murphy in my mind. I was starting to get worried after Showtime and The Adventures of Pluto Nash. I only have one problem with the movie that I have with most comedies involving children. How many kids do you know that will dare to actually kick an adult, especially a stranger? I was a little kid once; I know a lot of little kids. Never once, have I, one of my friends, or any other kid I know kicked an adult!

Later, I went and checked out A Mighty Wind, a spoof documentary about the reunion of three folk bands from the sixties. Its like Behind the Music gone bad, well actually really, really good. It’s a quirky comedy starring some familiar character actors and featuring a lot of laughs. With the rainy weather we’ve been having, a movie is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I’d definitely recommend Daddy Day Care for families and A Mighty Wind for adults who don’t want to take the kids.
