“A Little Flood History”
In light of the recent floods in Northeast Indiana, can history give us anything useful about managing this catastrophe? Given that water already covers 70% of the earth and that 3 rivers run through Allen County, we can be thankful for the high ground there is and be mindful that floods are likely to occur. We have therefore all the more reason for an adequate flood control system in Allen County.
Writing from Turkey, we have heard much recently about a flood here, not a recent one, but the Flood to Beat All Floods, Noah’s Flood. Noah’s Flood is in the news again because a team of scientists sponsored by National Geographic has set out to prove that the Biblical account of “The Flood” is based on the historical event of the Mediterranean Sea breaking through a massive natural dam in what is today the Bosphorus Strait, releasing a thundering wall of water hundreds of feet high into the Black Sea. The scientists are focusing their work on ancient cities 300 feet below the surface of the Black Sea. What makes the research more intriguing is that the traditional resting place of Noah’s Ark, Mt. Ararat, towers 17,000 above the Turkish plain on its border with the former Soviet Union.
Like explorers who have to find Noah’s Ark on Ararat, these scientists probably will not find any conclusive evidence to back their theory that Noah’s Flood was really the forming of the Black Sea. No one can dispute that Noah’s Flood really occurred, but God promised to preserve Noah’s descendants perpetually, not his Big Boat.
People are still talking about Noah’s Flood, they’ll probably be talking about the Flood of 2003 for years to come. Noah’s Flood was terrible, it took a long time to recover, and things were never quite the same; including the sky, which was graced with the stunning display of colors in the rainbow, a sign of hope after the flood. And so it remains today.
