THAT’S THE WAY I SAW IT

THERE IS SPIN EVERYWHERE

One of the definitions of spin in the dictionary is: “To tell a story, yarn, etc.” A synonym to spin is turn. The dictionary had a page and a half telling us what turn means. One definition is: To bend, fold, twist, etc.

The term spin has come into use lately, mostly in politics but as you review baseball activities there is, heaven forbid, a lot of spin.

A USA Today article dated October 16, 2003, read: Baker, GM Hendry make winning moves in Chicago. Quote: “The swiftness of the Cubs turnaround under Baker’s leadership caught many by surprise, but not me,” Hendry said. “The difference in attitude happened right away. I wasn’t surprised at that, that’s why he’s here and that’s why we wanted him so badly.”

The Cubs moved on and acquired; Paul Bako, Damian Miller, Mike Remlinger, Dave Veres, Mark Guthrie, Eric Karros, Mark Grudielanek, Kenny Lofton and Randall Simon. All of these are now gone. Baker stated: “The credit should go to Hendry for building and improving our club.”

I guess spin really works as both Baker & Hendry are still on the job.

Where did the Cubs finish? I wonder if colleges have an elective called ‘Spin Making’-Its Theory Results and Procedures,’ or is it something you pick up over the years. It takes history to reveal spin as in the beginning most people buy into it, lock, stock and barrel, and that means completely.
