HOMETOWN VIEWS

It was a cold snowy Monday afternoon when I decided to leave The Waynedale News and head south for some lunch. It would have been nice to just head south and keep going until I hit the Gulf, but that was not to be. No, I went down Lower Huntington Road to Winchester Road and turned towards Ferguson Road. I took a left at Ferguson and then a right on Hwy. 27 South and traveled under I-69 to the famous Nine-Mile Restaurant. Of course, traveling from Waynedale it is only eight miles. The restaurant is called Nine-Mile because it is 9 miles from the Allen County Courthouse. Joe Strack and Barry Liggett own the restaurant and it has been around since 1837.

In those days, the road was called the Piqua Road. It was a store and tavern for weary travelers navigating their way between Kekionga (Fort Wayne) and Monmouth, Indiana. When it is cold and snowy I am generally looking for really hot food and the Nine-Mile potato soup hit the spot. It is made with a creamy white sauce and accented with chunks of carrots and celery. The spices were just right, and there’s nothing that warms a body more than hot chunky potatoes.

The restaurant is divided into two rooms, a bar, and a family room. It was elbow to elbow at the bar and ‘ESPN Sports Center was on TV which made for an even more enjoyable lunch. If you are a weary traveler during these cold December days and are looking for a great meal at a reasonable price then Nine-Mile may be the place for you. They have a special Mexican Meal on Wednesday night and made-to-order Italian meals on Thursdays. The atmosphere is “small-town” and for dessert, they offer scrumptious pies from the Waynedale Bakery.
