Thursday evening, December 12th, found me at THE WAYNEDALE NEWS’ office instructing seven eager Tiger Cubs from Pack #3352 sponsored by Pleasant Center School, on the ideals of journalism, how to write news stories, and how we lay up the paper every other week. The group included Tiger Den Leader Barry Salway, Tiger Cub members Michael Barrera, Roy Barrera, Joe Howaniec, Daniel Tulley, Daniel Watson, Ian Newton, Dakota Salway, Weblos member Tyler Salway, Troop #354 Boy Scout Den Chiefs, Star Scout Eddie Howaniec & Tenderfoot Greg Offerle, and a Member of Troop 354’s Committee & “Proud Father, Ed Howaniec. (Troop #354 is sponsored by the Benoit Academy, 3029 E. Paulding Road.) These Scouts and Scout leaders were also accompanied by several adults, parents, and siblings of the Tigers and Scouts.

I explained how the paper was put together, how we collected information that we publish each edition, and how advertising pays the way for them to read a ‘FREE’ newspaper twice each month. I stopped every so often to answer questions, from the group, on subjects like newspaper work, writing as a profession, how to find how many papers are in a stack without actually counting them, and “. . . how much is the square root of four?”, which was asked by an eager young Tiger Cub, whose hair had been “accidentally” colored with purple crayons.

At the end of the session I presented packets of candy to the leaders to be distributed to all the Scouts in their Pack. The candy was given, compliments of Waynedale American Legion Post #241 and their Sergeant-at-Arms Chester Gwozdz.

For a tour of THE WAYNEDALE NEWS, please call me at 747-4535 for a time and appointment, there’s no charge if you ask nicely, and say, “please and thank you.”
