KINGSTON RESIDENTS CROSS THE FINISH LINE

Kingston Residence is proud to announce that eleven residents and two Kingston ambassadors completed the 2017 Fort 4 Fitness Senior Marathon! These residents needed to walk 26.2 miles throughout the summer months before the culmination at Parkview Field on September 29th. Through a combination of walking, rolling a wheelchair, water aerobics and exercising on the NuStep machine, these folks traveled a whopping 1025 miles!

Bob Dove, Joan Franklin, Eileen Gerardot, Joan Gotschall, Helen Herman, Rose Kiester, Rich Lutz, Ruth Marquart, Carole Overmyer, Jim Roth, Pat Temple, Joyce VanRy, and Violet Wuthrich put forth amazing effort this year to remain as active and healthy as possible. The participants ranged in age from 70 to 91 years old. Each kept track of their daily miles and met monthly to add up their totals.

Friday evening, Kingston was proud to bring eight of the thirteen residents from our enthusiastic group to participate in the final lap at Parkview Field. After watching the kids race by and applauding their effort, Kingston filed into a stadium filled with a sea of smiling faces. Being able to cross the finish line and receive a medallion was very rewarding for each.

While some residents have participated many times, this was the first year for Rose Kiester. “I’ve been a walker all my life,” Rose commented. She has even made friends with people while walking at Foster Park. Upon being asked why she chose to participate, Rose simply said she “did it for her own health.”

Rich Lutz had a brief respite stay at Kingston Residence after he was struck by a distracted driver while walking. He spoke of the Senior Marathon, “I’ve participated in two of them now. It helps me get exercise over the summer and supports my rehabilitation.” Rich has remained friends with many Kingston residents and now comes back as a volunteer to help with games, bingo, special events, etc. He even offered to walk with one of our residents during the event. “It was great experience to finish at Parkview Field and meet up with residents from another Kingston community, Kingston Care Center. What a great event for Fort Wayne,” he added.

The residents are already looking forward to walking in the marathon again next year. Hope to see YOU there. In the meantime, we’ll set our sights on tracking our miles to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras.
